Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Jackson, and a bit more!
Yellowstone is pretty far from Jackson. Although the lower loop is do-able from Jackson in a long day, chances are you will not opt to go back to Yellowstone. So, if you really want to see Yellowstone DON’T USE JACKSON AS A BASE CAMP! Stay in Jackson at some point, because it’s a great town and great base camp for Grand Teton adventures. But Make sure to give yourself a minimum of 2 full days in Yellowstone, staying in the park (www.travelyellowstone.com) or in one of the gateway towns of West Yellowstone, Montana or Gardiner, Montana.
Make all reservations as soon as possible; dinner reservations, all activities, rooms, and camp spots! There are certain parts of the year when things are booked and fill up fast. It would be a bummer to not be able to participate in the activity you are most looking forward to!
Click here for the official site for Yellowstone National Park. It is full of much needed information like road closures, maps, details of what you’ll see from animals to wildflowers, and much much more.

THINGS TO DO
Rafting
While in the area rafting is a must! There are white water and scenic floats.Definitely plan ahead and make a reservation well in advance!!! There are many companies that do a great job at both white water and scenic floats with skilled guides you can trust. In Jackson, check out Barker-Ewing River Trips at 1.800.448.4201 or at www.barker-ewing.com.
Swimming
If you’ll be on the northern end of Yellowstone, bring a bathing suit! Boiling River is a fun experience (and free!). It is a natural hot spring that pours into the Gardner River creating a wonderful mix of cold river water and hot spring water. If you make your way around the flow of hot spring water in the river you’ll find the perfect mix just relax!! There is an area that is great for small kids. But like always, keep an eye on the little rascals. The water coming out of the spring is hot enough to burn. You don’t want to get to close!!! Bring sandals that won’t come off in the river (no flip flops), and something to walk back to the car in (walking is wet sandals is no fun!). The walk out is on a well traveled ¼ mile trail. Boiling river is located at the 45th parallel between Mammoth Hot Springs and the town of Gardiner.
Dining
A local’s favorite for dinner in the Jackson area is Dornan’s (casual Italian). They are about 15 min north of Jackson in the Grand Teton National Park. There is a wine shop next door with knowledgeable wine-o’s. Make sure to get a table on the roof and hang out for the sunset behind the Tetons. Totally memorable!! Bring a jacket. When the sun drops so does the temp! |
